Sarnia Retrofit - 21 Principles for Prosperity

The thesis extracts from The Blue Zones (the principle influence), as well as many other references, certain applicable patterns and principles which can be reflected in the built environment of cities in such a way that promotes healthy living and puts people in the best possible conditions which would be conducive of a happy lifestyle. In particular, these principles are tailor made for small cities with a population below 100,000 (cities which can only support one downtown) as these cities are typically overlooked and not planned in ways which are conducive to the positive effects that these principles search to encourage. These principles will then be taken and applied to the small city of Sarnia, ON Canada in an attempt to eradicate the city’s problems. This city has a population of 71,594 people and has experienced high rates of suicide in recent years.
